Con m\u00e1s de 180 km de longitud, el glaciar desciende desde la meseta polar hasta la barrera de hielo Ross en esta imagen satelital en falso color. Las largas y amplias l\u00edneas de flujo se cruzan en algunos lugares con l\u00edneas mucho m\u00e1s cortas, que son profundas grietas. Las llamativas manchas rojas indican zonas de roca expuesta. El glaciar recibi\u00f3 su nombre en honor al contralmirante Byrd, de la Armada de los EE. UU., quien fue un explorador ant\u00e1rtico.
