En la costa, el piso inferior de la vertiente occidental, el clima es des\u00e9rtico, con lluvias muy escasas y mal distribuidas que se incrementan a medida que se avanza en altitud; zonas con clima templado y seco se encuentran en los pisos medios de las vertientes andinas oriental y occidental, as\u00ed como en el Callej\u00f3n de Huaylas; fr\u00edo y seco en las punas y altas mesetas; muy fr\u00edo en las cumbres nevadas.
